To promote the intimacy, the text was reduced down to its bare element, eliminating everything else but the few letters that conveys the key emotion of the book. A new font suit was created based on Sabon Roman typeface, using Fontographer.
Distilling the story
The three main story arcs of the plot are each converted into a colour, and as the story evolves and the plots come together in the climax, the colours get mixed to communicate the hightened emotions and interconnected storylines.
The colour overlay was coded and generated in Processing. The entire text of Raymond Chandler’s ‘The long goodbye’ was processed through the algorithm, and I designed, printed, and hand-bound the book myself.
